Swift Water Council's Mission: To build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. We operate in an environment where every voice is valued and where each person is respected.
Description:
Girl Scouts of Swift Water Council serves girls ages 5 to 17 in New Hampshire and eastern Vermont and is chartered by Girl Scouts USA. We have a membership of nearly 14,000 girls and 4,200 adult volunteers. Our structure is based upon community units supported by administrative volunteers and staff. Girls develop their leadership potential through activities that enable them to discover their values, skills and the world around them; connect with others in a multicultural environment, and take action to make a difference in the world. We operate two resident camps and five day camps during the summer, as well as numerous activity centers during school vacations. Our Girl Scout camps provide a safe, all-girl, outdoor experience where well-trained staff provide positive role models and offer developmentally appropriate challenges and opportunities to learn essential life skills such as leadership and decisionmaking. We offer a variety of fun experiences which celebrate each girl's individuality, while encouraging teamwork and an appreciation for diversity.
History:
Girl Scouts of the USA was founded in 1912. Over the last 96 years, Girl Scouts of the USA has become the largest organization serving girls in the world, with a membership of more than 3.6 million. The Girl Scouts of Swift Water Council was incorporated in 1958, during a national council organizational effort by Girl Scouts of the USA to better serve girls in rural areas. This 50th year of Swift Water, named for the Connecticut River which flows between NH and VT, will be our last. In 2009 we will join with the Girl Scout Council of Vermont in a new council -- with a new name to be determined by the girls -- to give girls more experiences and opportunities.
