To improve the lives of people living with brain injury from trauma, tumor or stroke.
Description:
SteppingStones is an innovative, post-rehabilitation, community-based day program that empowers members to engage in a variety of functional activities that increase independence, community integration, and overall quality of life. The program provides an opportunity for creative, emotional, functional, physical, recreational, social and emotional growth, friendship and support. Groups may include computer skills, creative writing, cognitive retraining, cooking, gardening, board games, yoga, adaptive sports, meditation, mental health topics, movement, art, and music. Special events include guest speakers, live music, dance performances, picnics and field trips. Our goal is to bring participants to their full potential and highest level of independence. SteppingStones utilizes a client centered philosophy in which members make choices about the groups they attend and what is offered in the program.
History:
SteppingStones is a program of The Krempels Brain Injury Foundation, and was established in October, 2000. We have an active membership of approximately 80 participants with 30-40 members attending on any given day. The program is located at the Community Campus, off Route 1 in Portsmouth. SteppingStones works closely with several departments at UNH, including Occupational Therapy, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Therapeutic Recreation, Social Work, and Family Studies. The program has three professional staff and relies heavily on interns and volunteers to support the activities that are an integral part of SteppingStones.
