Mayhew is focused on helping at-risk NH boys believe in themselves, work better with others and go for their best.

Description:
Mayhew serves NH boys 10- to 17-years-of-age. Nearly all come from low-income, single-parent families who lack the resources and opportunities Mayhew can provide for their sons. Most boys are referred because they are making troubling social and behavioral choices, which are leading to pronounced
difficulties at home, in school and elsewhere.

Principal activities:
Summer Program: Boys participate in Mayhew’s month-long, highly challenging and supportive residential summer program on Newfound Lake. They are encouraged (and expected) to try everything we ask of them, to do their best and to work with others.

School year follow-up: Staff visit regularly with each boy, encouraging him to bring Mayhew and the program ideals to his life at home, school and beyond.

Link-Up: After two full years, boys can become Links (the 12-17-year-olds in the program) for up to four more years. They benefit from continued summer
programming and follow-up visits. Links can also work for the program, earning a salary and a dollar-for-dollar matching scholarship for post-secondary
educational pursuits.

History:
Mayhew’s roots go back to 1893, when Groton School, an independent boarding school in Groton, MA, began operation of a summer camp for underprivileged, inner-city New England boys on NH’s Squam Lake. Moving to nearby Newfound Lake in the early 1920’s, Groton School Camp continued its important work with needy boys until it closed in 1966 when Groton School’s focus turned to matters on campus.

Through the dedication and hard work of several former GSC staff and staff from neighboring Camp Pasquaney, the mission of Groton School Camp was picked up with enthusiasm in 1969 with the formation of the Mayhew Island Project, to support underprivileged boys in Manchester, NH.

Today, the Mayhew Program has served 1609 at-risk boys from across New Hampshire over 38 consecutive years and it has developed a tremendous reputation for helping deserving and inspiring boys to find their very best.
