Our agency (FMJS) is dedicated to providing quality resources to youth and families in order to reduce delinquency and out of home placements, and to empower them as individuals, family members and citizens of the community.
Description:
FMJS focuses on providing trained volunteer mediators who meet with families on a regular basis. They assist families in finding new ways of managing conflict and in helping each family member voice concerns by clarifying ways the situation could change for a more positive environment. We also work with local schools in developing and training peer mediators. We offer teen educational courses in substance abuse, anger management, stop shop-lifting and tobacco education. Our substance abuse and anger management courses offer a parental component that runs concurrently with the youth program. We also work within the community to establish restorative justice by offering a community service program where the juvenile works with local volunteers who supervise them in a variety of activities. Restitution and victim reimbursement services are also provided.
History:
The agency, established in 1983, serves Atkinson, Danville, Hampstead, Kingston, Newton, Plaistow and Salem, NH. Local communities found there were fewer and fewer options available to families in conflict. The agency specifically addresses conflicts between teens and parents in which the teen is placing him/her self at risk through delinquent behavior, failures in school, drug and alcohol issues, or running away.
