The Wentworth-Gardner and Tobias Lear Houses are dedicated to preserving the three buildings on site for the public and future generations.

Description:
Located in the historic district of Portsmouth, NH; The Wentworth-Gardner and Tobias Lear Houses are adjacent to each other on Mechanic and Hunking Streets in the South End of the city. Both houses are listed by the National Park Service on the Register of Historic Places in Washington, DC.
The houses date from the mid-1700's and are classic examples of Georgian architecture. Tours are given by volunteer guides, to the public, from June through October each year.
Stewardship of the property is governed by a Board of Directors. The Board meets monthly to discuss and act upon the needs of the organization. Each board member heads a committee that has responsibilities related to various aspects of our mission.
Members of the organization are frequently asked to volunteer to participate on these committees.

History:
The WGTLHA was formed 1940.
Wentworth-Gardner House was purchased from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which had acquired it from Wallace Nutting in 1918. Mr. Nutting had restored the property from 1915 to 1918.
The Tobias Lear House was purchased from the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities(SPNEA).
The Association has maintained the houses for 63 years.
The rooms have been refurbished, preserved and restored through private donations from our members.
