Senior Companion Program of NH
Powered by Truist

Last updated on February 25, 2008

The Senior Companion Program of NH is a volunteer service which promotes the independence of frail elderly or disabled adults living in the community. Healthy, active senior citizens are matched with frail, usually homebound elderly for friendly visiting and help with essential errands such as grocery shopping, transportation to medical appointments and assistance with light chores.

Description:
Senior "Companion" volunteers provide twenty to forty hours of service each week visiting people, providing respite and helping to maintain independence for as long as possible. Regular weekly visits go beyond merely checking on the elder. Trusting friendships are formed, and both volunteer and those visited benefit from the lasting relationships. The volunteers who meet federal income guidelines receive a tax-free stipend, personal leave, holiday pay and transportation reimbursement.
The Senior Companion Program is truly a community effort with thirty health or human service organizations throughout the State partnered to identify those in need. Through this collaboration, communities are strengthened, our neighbors are maintained at home, and volunteers experience pride in their important work.

History:
The Senior Companion Program of NH has been serving the community since 1976. The SCP serves through agencies in Belknap, Cheshire, Carroll, Coos, Grafton, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham, Strafford, and Sullivan Counties.
