Because of its location, nature, and purpose, the Urban Forestry Center is ideally suited to serve as an example of an urban forest. The 182 acre forested/wetland tract will function principally as a demonstration area and its facilities will be used for teaching, education, and research in urban forestry.

Description:
The Urban Forestry Center offers the public the uniqueness of a forested area located just outside of downtown Portsmouth. There are hiking trails, a fitness course, an arboretum, and a forest management area. All of this is surrounded by beautiful gardens, landscape demonstrations and views of the nearby salt marshes.

History:
The Urban Forestry Center was established in 1976 and was given to the people of New Hampshire through a generous bequest by John Elwyn Stone, a direct descendant of John Langdon. Mr. Stone's gift originally consisted of several buildings, 162 acres of field, forest and saltmarsh, and the annual income from a trust fund. An additional 20 acres was purchased bringing the total to 182 acres. The Department of Resources and Economic Development, Division of Forests and Lands manages the property.
