The Fixit Program strives to help senior (60 years or older)or disabled citizens remain independent and in their own homes. We do this by providing free maintenance and repair to the home. The only charge, if any, would be for materials needed to successfully complete the job.

Description:
Fixit volunteers provide maintenance and repair when they are available. Our retired volunteers, who make up the backbone of our program, provide services during the day. Our volunteers who have jobs provide assistance evenings or on weekends.
Jobs performed are those typically needed in any home...plumbing(leaky faucets/drains), building (repair steps, decks, rails grab bars), electrical (lamp stitches, smoke detectors), painting (trim, steps[not full houses]), and cleaning (yards).
The Fixit Program will also assist clients with modular wheelchair ramps. Even though a ramp is not a minor maintenance project we are involved with modular ramps because they are 80% recyclable (thereby helping others who need a ramp).
The majority of our clients are women whose husbands have passed away and whose adult children are not available to help with the maintenance of the home.

History:
The Fixit Program (f.k.a. Mr.Fixit)was founded in 1994 by United Way of Merrimack County. Community Action Program Belknap-Merrimack Counties, Inc. agreed to manage the program in April of that year.
Clients from Merrimack and Belknap Counties may call for assistance. Clients from anywhere in the state may call for wheelchair ramp assistance.
There are no financial requirements to use the program. All too frequently the elderly cannot find anyone to do small jobs regardless of what they can afford to pay.
The Fixit Program received calls for 100 jobs in it's first year. In 2007, nearly 697 homeowners requesting more than 2,523 different services, in 4 counties, were assisted.
Currently the program receives no state or federal grant monies, and receives half of it's operating funds from the United Way. Donations from clients, and other sources are needed to make up the difference.
