Somersworth Main Street's mission is to encourage revitalization and reinvestment by fostering a strong and proud connection between downtown and the community. Our vision for Downtown Somersworth is for it to be an attractive, friendly, vibrant New England town with a lively riverfront, thriving businesses and a center where the community gathers to celebrate its unique culture and heritage.
Description:
Somersworth Main Street was established to help rebuild, promote, and foster Somersworth's downtown district. We view the downtown as the heart of our community, and we work to promote, revitalize, and reinvest in the historic, natural, and economic vitality of the area. We are funded through the investment of private businesses, community residents, and the City of Somersworth. Our work is done through a committee structure. There are four committees working simultaneously to improve the living and working conditions in the downtown area. The committees include:
- Design (Focuses on needed visible improvements)
- Promotions (Coordinates community events in the downtown)
- Organization (Keeps the organization running through fundraising, volunteer recruitment, publicity, etc.)
- Economic Development (Analyzes the downtown business mix and works with developers and business owners to continually improve the districts economic viability)
History:
Somersworth Main Street was established in 2002 after being selected as a NH Main Street Community. To date, the organization has focused on smaller projects, seeking to establish itself as a community-focused organization. In 2005, we will be expanding our projects to include a new Heritage Festival, additional planting projects, and a business recruitment packet.
