UNH Cooperative Extension provides New Hampshire citizens with research-based education and information, enhancing their ability to make informed decisions that strengthen youth, families and communities, sustain natural resources, and improve the economy.
Description:
Through its network of county Extension Educators, Cooperative Extension reaches out to individuals and communities across the state with educational resources such as workshops, classes, publications, and individual assistance. Major initiatives currently include Sustaining NH's Natural Resources, Strengthening NH Families and Youth, Strengthening NH Communities, and Improving NH's Economy. Program examples include food safety training, money management programs, parenting, youth lifeskills development, 4H clubs and events, urban and community forestry, preserving rural character through agriculture, water quality, plant health, pesticide education and many others. Extension multiplies its educational efforts by using trained volunteers in a variety of ways.
History:
UNH Cooperative Extension started around the turn of the century and was formalize as a national system by the Smith Lever Act of 1914.
It is a cooperative partnership between the USDA at the federal level and UNH at the state level and county governments. Through this county-based partnership, UNH Extension Educators, faculty, and over 5000 local volunteers work together to extend unbiased, research-based information with local residents.
