The mission of the Squamscott Community Commons is to improve the quality of community and family life by creating and maintaining an intergenerational center that provides social, health, recreational, cultural and education opportunities for all.
Description:
Squamscott Community Commons plans to construct a community center that will be home to a full-service family YMCA and agencies that provide programs and services in health, wellness, arts, culture, nutrition, childcare and recreation to the region.
The integrated and sustainable green design of this centrally located facility will enhance the participating agencies’ capacity and reduce their operating costs. The agencies, in turn, can focus on what they do best: provide effective programs and services for our community.
What Makes this Project Innovative?
The project is a nationwide model of collaboration between a YMCA, nonprofit agencies and schools.
This facility will promote interaction and cooperation between towns in the region and be a central gathering place for individuals, the community, and organizations.
Squamscott Community Commons will serve as a resource and catalyst to enable participating agencies, local businesses and health services to benefit from new partnerships and collaborative ventures that will enhance the community they serve.
Squamscott Community Commons will be able to promote the development of a vital base of volunteers for the community.
Squamscott Community Commons will have the capacity to be responsive to changing needs and demographics.
Programs and Services
Squamscott Community Commons will work on behalf of the participating agencies to create an efficient, economic, inviting, and stable home for their programs. In addition, the Commons will provide leadership and vision in forging new partnerships and creative programs between the participating agencies as well as the greater community and outside agencies.
This facility will enable a variety of organizations to implement their priorities of serving adults, youth and families in a central location with adequate space, and in a cost-effective manner. The community will benefit by the “one-stop shopping” approach for services in this centralized location.
History:
Squamscott Community Commons was originally established. We have scoured the area for a good location, and after considering over 20 sites, have entered into a purchase and sale agreement with SAU16 for the old junior high site on Linden St. in Exeter.
