The Villages, Inc.
| Last updated on January 7, 2008 |
The Villages provides emotionally supportive homes and families to children and youth in need. The Villages fosters a philosophy of conserving and preserving nature and our natural resources within each of the homes and through the activities of the W. Clement Stone Nature Center.
Description:
The Villages provides family style group homes and foster homes to children from 6 to 18+. Founded in 1964 by Dr. Karl Menninger but never connected to the Menninger Foundation, the youth are parented by couples who live in the homes (often with their own children) and provide a structured, home-like environment for even very troubled youth to grow and change problem behaviors. The W Clement Stone Nature Center uses a 372 acre private preserve, an adventure challenge course (ropes course) and a program animal collection to provide nature education and adventure challenge programs to Villages Youth and more than 12,000 others from the community annually.
History:
Founded in the 60's by Dr. Karl Menninger and his friends, The Villages was an early pioneer in providing family style homes with live-in parents for children who otherwise would have lived in institutions. In part through Dr. Karl's writings, contacts and education for youth agency staff provided at The Villages, the norm now is 'cottages' or 'homes' rather than the 'Mickey Rooney's Boys Town' institutional style of care (even at Boys Town). The Villages has 5 homes in Topeka and 2 in Lawrence.
