Description:
Capital City School

Capital City School (CCS) is a Topeka Public Schools (USD 501) special purpose school. Fifth through twelfth grade students with emotional and behavioral difficulties are served in this special education program. All students have been evaluated and referred by their home schools. An IEP (Individual Education Plan) team, which includes parents/ guardians, has determined that a student’s needs require the program at CCS.
The school is divided into six ‘clusters’. Each cluster serves approximately twenty-five students. Two clusters serve elementary and middle school students; the other four serve high school students. Instruction is provided from 7:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., five days a week. Each cluster has an educational team of four teachers, three paraprofessionals and a student advisor. This program design allows a team of adults to focus on a specific and limited number of students. Each team of educational staff meets several times a week to discuss and plan educational programming for their students.
Capital City School collaborates closely with Family Service and Guidance Center (FSGC) to meet the students’ needs. FSGC offers day treatment during the school day in the school building. Educational and mental health teams provide interventions for selected students. FSGC also has four mental health specialists who work directly with students in classrooms. CCS collaborates with all disciplines at FSGC, case managers, therapists and others, to support and address the needs of CCS students. (While CCS may have a reputation among some for dangerousness, in reality, serious acts of violence are less prevalent due to the extensive supervision CCS students receive.)
