History:
Not long ago, Alzheimer's disease was widely considered a hopeless condition. It was poorly understood by doctors, researchers and policy makers. People with the disease and their caregivers had few resources for information and support. The local Alzheimer's Association Topeka Chapter office was established in October of 1985 within the framework of the National Alzheimer's Association. This office was opened as a result of a local small group of concerned family members and professionals who were dealing with this desease on a personal level and recognized the need for information, family connections and emotional support as they cared for the individuals with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.
At the direction of the national office the Topeka office merged with the Heart of America Chapter in 2002. All of the family, caregiver and professional services have remained constant and significantly grown throughout the 23 year history of the association. The service territory of this office has also expanded and includes Shawnee County and the 22 counties in Northeast Kansas. With 1 out of every 8 baby boomers predicted to have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease sustaining and increasing our vital programs is vital. We are committed to achieving a victory - a world without Alzheimer's disease, as we continue to enhance our care supports, advance research and increase public awareness.
