The mission of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Topeka (BBBS) is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships. The vision of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Topeka is successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools, and stronger communities for all. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Topeka's service area is Shawnee, Jackson, Jefferson, Osage and Eastern Pottawatomie counties.
Description:
Our agency offers mentoring opportunities in several formats. Community Based Mentoring is a positive one-to-one adult role model matched with a child, who primarily come from single parent households. Big in Schools (BIS) creates one-to-one relationships with adults and children in schools. Thirty minutes once per week is all it takes to make a significant difference for the child! High School Bigs match high school students with an elementary school student. The "match" time occurs at the school. National Guard Bigs match adults who have been on military deployment with children whose parent is about to be or is currently deployed.
History:
BBBS of Topeka was founded in 1968 by Robert Bugg, former director of Youth Counseling at East Topeka United Methodist Church; Robert Estes, social worker for Menninger's Community Service Office, and J.B. Littlejohn, a Juvenile Probation Officer. These three individuals had a mutual concern for youth and felt BBBS could fill a gap in a youth's life.
