The purpose of Mother to Mother is to connect volunteer "Mentor Mothers" with at-risk mothers who can benefit from the experience and friendship of a Mentor Mother. We focus on the well being of mothers as the first step in creating a positive home environment. The participant mothers in our program often were abused as children themselves. Most live at or below poverty level. Many participants are single mothers. Some of our mothers have children with mental or physical disabilities. Other participant mothers may be isolated or lack a good support system. The goals of the mentor-participant relationship are to prevent child abuse, help mothers obtain skills to become self-sufficient, aquire confidence and tools to create positive and healthy relationships with their children and to work with mothers so they can best utilize community resources. Mother to Mother is unique in that it is one of the few organizations in our area serving families with school age children.

Description:
Mother to Mother recruits and connects volunteer mentor mothers with participant mothers. We conduct background checks on all mothers in our program. Potential mentor mothers complete an application and in-person interview. A comprehensive training session is offered several times through out the year. Participant mothers are interviewed by our licensed social worker who uses an assessment tool to gather information about the mother's life situation. After this information is gathered, what we hope will be a successful team is put together. The Mother to Mother staff monitors the team and offers support. Additionally, we produce a free monthly newsletter and hold a monthly group meeting. There is no cost to participate in the program. We do not have income guidelines for participants; the only requirement is that she be a mother living in Shawnee County.

History:
Mother to Mother was started as a church agency in Topeka in 1992. It incorporated and became independent in 1997. We have an advisory board comprised of a variety of community leaders. Mother to Mother exists soley by private donations.
