Community Based Mentoring UW
Last updated on March 27, 2008

Adult mentors are matched with a "Little" in the program. They spend time with this child at least three times a month for a minimum of one year. We ask the volunteers to incorporate the child into their lives by doing everyday activities like sharing projects together, watching movies, baking cookies, washing the car, building a deck, running errands, reading a book and doing homework. The possibilities are endless.
These little moments, create big magic! A study of 1,000 children showed that when compared with a control group of children on the waiting list, children who had a Big Brother or Big Sister were
•46% less likely to initiate drug use. (The strongest effect was on minority Littles who decreased drug initiation by 70 percent as compared with minority youth on the waiting list.)
• 27% less likely to initiate alcohol use.
• Skipped half as many days of school and felt more competent about doing schoolwork.
• 31% less likely to hit someone.
• Have an improved relationship with parents, peers and siblings.

A volunteer must be at least 18 years of age, have lived in the area for at least six months, pass child safety checks (KBI, SRS, and DMV) and provide four references. There is an application to complete and home visit may be conducted.
