The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad is an independent non-profit corporation dedicated to providing emergency medical services (EMS), non-emergency ambulance transportation and safety training to the Summit community, and when requested, emergency assistance to surrounding communities.
Description:
The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad is the official EMS agency of the City of Summit. We are staffed 100% by volunteers, are funded solely through private contributions, and provide all services free of charge. We provide emergency (9-1-1) ambulance response 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We also regularly provide assistance to communities in Union, Essex and Morris counties and occasionally other parts of the state and even New York. Our Fire Scene Support unit responds to major fire scenes throughout Union County. Volunteer hours are flexible. Uniforms and all required training are provided.
History:
In 1962, a group of local residents and business owners started the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad with a donated used ambulance and a borrowed garage. Our building was constructed in 1964 and we obtained a 2nd new ambulance. In 1978 an addition was built to house a 3rd ambulance. Today, the squad has over 80 volunteers and operates 3 new ambulances, a first responder truck and a major incident trailer. We answer just over 2,000 calls for help each year.
