The mission of Roots & Wings is to provide abused and neglected young adults, who have aged out of the child welfare system, with the necessary life skills to become self-sufficient productive adults by providing them with vital support services.
Description:
Roots & Wings provides nurturing personal support and practical life skills for young adults who have aged out of the child welfare system. It is a collaborative community based volunteer effort that applies practical energies to a high-risk population of disadvantaged youth in an attempt to replace dependency with self-sufficiency. Roots & Wings provides clients with access to mentors, housing, education, health care and employment resources. Each client is carefully selected to enter the program through a screening process. Upon entering the program, they are paired with a trained mentor, as well as with a social worker. Since Roots & Wings provides each client with necessary resources to become self sufficient, there are numerous volunteer opportunities specific to supporting the clients. There are also opportunities to help support the general organization in its fundraising and outreach.
History:
The Roots & Wings Foundation began in 1999. Its founder, Irene DeGrandpre of Mountain Lakes, had volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children. She saw first hand how teenagers aging out of the child welfare system were lacking in the life skills they needed to become successful adults.
