The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, let by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. It does this through services that are consistent with its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement.

Description:
The Grant Wood Area Chapter serves the residents of many Eastern Iowa counties. More than 800 active volunteers from all walks of life work together to make this community a safer place to live, work and play. Among the services the Grant Wood Area Chapter provides are: disaster relief, military and veteran assistance, health and safety education, blood services, emergency preparedness education, HIV education and client support and international services.

History:
The Grant Wood Area Chapter was formed in 1917 when a group of volunteers were recruited to knit and roll bandages for World War I. Since that time, the Grant Wood Area Chapter has continuously met the changing demands of Eastern Iowa, the nation and the world with a variety of programs and services. From natural disasters to the Great Depression, in the midst of devastating diseases such as polio and HIV, the American Red Cross Grant Wood Area Chapter continues to respond to people in need.

Overall Experience    Experience rating
It is an incredible experience that helps save lives

The American Red Cross is a wonderful organization that has many opportunites and services available for volunteering. Becoming a CPR instructor has been an awesome experience. I know that I am helping save lives by equipping my community with the life-saving skills. I sharpened my leadership and public speaking skills as well.
