Inspired by Christian faith, the Church Council works for compassion, reconciliation, justice and peace with diverse people and faith communities.
Description:
The Church Council operates ten different programs that provide human services in the areas of homelessness, youth development, mental health and compassionate care. Our Social Justice Ministry involves thousands of people in the community and is focused on overcoming poverty and building social justice. As a voice for the faith community, we speak up on social and economic issues and help lead efforts for positive change. We also work to strengthen and connect communities of faith through a variety of programs and resources.
History:
In 1919 representatives from 62 congregations gathered at Plymouth Congregational Church determined to unite their congregations under the Christian call for compassion in community. In the years following the Council has worked on the themes of peace, economic justice and religious tolerance. Involvement in the movements for disarmament, livable wages, diversity/desegregation, and the move to end homelessness are some of the hallmarks of the work of The Council. The beginning of the 21st century met the Council with a renewed commitment to ecumenical cooperation and engaging our members in civic life.
