Earth Matters!, a nonprofit organization, works towards a sustainable future by reaching children, our current and future environmental stewards and leaders, in their formative years. We strive to activate and nurture children's desire to care for the Earth and help them, their schools and their families develop and adopt sound practices, so that environmental stewardship becomes a natural expression of who they are. EM! is committed to being an integral part of thriving communities, here and abroad, where all people have a deep understanding of and access to vital natural resources, including locally grown and healthy foods.
Description:
Earth Matters! offers fun, informative, and compelling standards-based nutrition and environmental education curricula for grades 4 and 5. We bring our subject matter to life through student-centered, inquiry-based lesson plans that emphasize hands-on, interactive learning and activities. EM! programs engage children's minds, bodies and imaginations. We provide them with a deeper understanding of how sustainability principles and practices can directly benefit their own lives while ensuring the well-being or our global community, now and for future generations.
History:
We began by producing a series of environmental films for lower grades six years ago. We then developed an environmental resource and reference website for K-6 students and teachers, which has close to 200 viewers a day. Two years ago, we brought together a team of teachers, science writers and sustainability experts to develop standards-based, sustainability curricula specifically for 4th and 5th grades. And we are pleased to say that this curriculum was launched in Fall, 2007.
