Our Next Generation, Inc. has been working with Milwaukee's children and youth for the past 15 years to help them achieve academic and personal excellence. Our programming addresses the academic, social, behavioral and economic needs of youth all in an interconnected and long-term fashion. In the past 2 ½ years the number of children and youth served has grown by more than 700% and volunteer tutors and mentors are needed throughout the school year and summer. Volunteers are integral to the students’ success and engage and positively impact them through:
- One-on-one academic support and enrichment
- Small group activities such as reading and poetry groups, arts and crafts, and writing, mathematics and character building workshops
- Special projects and activities to encourage creativity, discussion and community
- Interpersonal relationships that foster self confidence and respect
Thank you for learning more about the many ways you can help students achieve academic and personal success. We look forward to discussing your interests and availability. Please check our website for program highlights and ongoing and new volunteer opportunities at www.ongkids.org.
Description:
Letter from the President/CEO There are many ways to look at our community, often seen as one of the most troubled in the city. Families who proactively seek support of our tutors to assure their children’s success, show us determination. We see progress when students in our High School Connection are averaging almost double the district GPA and ALL our high school seniors are graduating and going on to higher education. Some see dismal statistics. In fifth grader Shamauri, we see gratitude when she brings us a valentine. We see ambition in Terrance when he completes his high school courses early and excitedly shares his admission letter to Marquette University. We see pride in Catherine, a Rufus King senior, when she, with great excitement and sparkling eyes, tells us she has been accepted at four colleges including UW Madison and UW Whitewater. When a request is made of our students for help and seas of waving hands appear, we see community. Many look at the joblessness in our community and wonder what is wrong. We see companies like Artisan Partners working with us to provide internships for our high school students. We see volunteers at Manpower committing to our future work force by opening their doors and welcoming our students to their offices twice each week for tutoring. We see the support of large and small businesses that commit their dollars and talent to help us reach our next generation of leaders. Some look at the schools in our area and wonder why so many children are underachieving and falling increasingly behind. We see gifted administrators and dedicated teachers who partner with us to bring after-school and summer programming to children, giving them that extra support and guidance they need to achieve. We are not blind to the significant challenges the youth and families face in our community, but we are continually inspired when they share their dreams and demonstrate their resiliency. The volunteers encourage us with their unwavering support of our vision and their commitment to the children’s success. We know our kids and we see their promise - their faces of hope. Your enduring help and support lets the kids know that rather than seeing despairing statistics, you see their gratitude, success, ambition, excitement, determination, pride and potential. Sincerely, Robert R. Dunn President/CEO
