The Susan B. Anthony House is a learning center through which we share and interpret Miss Anthony's life as a champion of women's rights, thereby inspiring and challenging individuals to make a positive difference in their lives and communities.
Description:
Susan B. Anthony House, Inc. comprises a campus of four buildings on Madison Street, Rochester. Miss Anthony's home of 40 years, #17 Madison Street, is a National Historic Landmark, open for public tours and preserved as a museum, with extensive furnishings, photographs, and other memorabilia from the Anthony family and the suffrage movement. Miss Anthony's sister Hannah Anthony Mosher's home next door at #19 Madison Street serves as the Visitors Center, complete with gift shop and exhibit rooms where the House tour begins. Behind these two houses is the Carriage House, a reproduction of a 19th-century building, with full kitchen and a large room (capacity of 49) suitable for learning programs, meetings, luncheons, teas, or retreats. Across the street at #16 Madison Street are the administrative offices for the organization. The Susan B. Anthony House is part of the Susan B. Anthony Historic Preservation District, a unique nine-block area that includes 19th-century homes and commercial buildings. The House is a full partner with the city of Rochester and the Susan B. Anthony Neighborhood Association in West Main Street restoration and development.
History:
The Susan B. Anthony House was the home of the legendary women's rights leader from 1866 until her death in 1906. In 1907, upon the death of Susan's sister, Mary Anthony, the House was sold out of the family and owned privately for nearly forty years. In 1945, a group of women from Rochester collected sufficient funds to purchase the House and incorporate it as the Susan B. Anthony Memorial, Inc. in 1946. For the next 46 years, the House was wholly managed, directed, and financed by volunteers. In 1992, the first paid staff member was hired and a new era of professional museum management followed. The exterior of the House was fully restored in 2004. The interior restoration began in the summer of 2006 and continues, room by room, as funds are available.
