The Children's Center at Burke Gilman Gardens is a childcare center (Washington non-profit corporation) that opened in March, 1998. Our Mission is to provide a nurturing, high quality learning experience that enhances the self-esteem of all participants and promotes mutual respect and caring while respecting diversity.
Description:
The Children’s Center enrolls children from Toddlers (eighteen months) through Pre-Kindergarten (five and one-half years). Our goal is to provide a program that is “child-centered” and that revolves around and responds to the individual needs of the children in our care. A significant portion of the children we serve come from low- to moderate-income families, as defined by HUD income standards. Some of these families qualify for DSHS, City of Seattle, or University of Washington childcare subsidies.
History:
The Children's Center is located near Children's Hospital in northeast Seattle. Our landlord is the Capitol Hill Housing Improvement Program, a Washington public development authority. Historically, we have received significant funding from the Burke Gilman Public Development Authority (BGPDA). The BGPDA manages this neighborhood, which is former Coast Guard property. At present, facilities include Ronald McDonald House (two facilities), Provail (formerly United Cerebral Palsy) housing, Burke-Gilman Apartments (subsidized and market-rate housing), The Children’s Center (a childcare center), and housing under the auspices of the Capitol Hill Housing Improvement Program (CHHIP).
