Hunger Intervention Program
[ View Opportunity ]
Last updated on January 21, 2008

The mission of Hunger Intervention Program is to provide nourishing breakfasts meals to homeless people in Downtown Seattle. In partnership with other meal providers and food banks, HIP also advocates for the homeless and the hungry.

Description:
Hunger Intervention Program currently prepares, delivers, and serves breakfast to homeless clients of the Downtown Emergency Services Shelter. This is a uniquely vulnerable population with special needs for the improved nutrition and friendly greeting that are HIP hallmarks. HIP is an all-volunteer organization with over 60 volunteers and a dedicated Advisory Board.

HIP needs dedicated volunteers who can serve breakfast from 8 to 9AM at the shelter (517 3rd Ave). Weekend chefs are also needed to serve from 7AM to 8:30 heating entrees or cooking hot menu items in the shelter's kitchen.

History:
HIP began in 1998 as a Friday lunch program for Operation: Sack Lunch. In 2005, the group began serving 3 times per week on the corner of 3rd and Yesler in response to the closure of major outdoor meal sites downtown. HIP was chartered as an independent program by Lake City Presbyterian Church in August 2005 and enjoys excellent support from the church and a growing list of faith-based and lay partner organizations.
