Our mission is to overcome the effects of postpartum mood disorders through early identification and treatment and to ensure a healthy environment in which both mother and baby can thrive together. PSI of WA has three goals:
To provide personal support to women with postpartum mood disorders and their families.
To educate the public concerning the nature and management of this disorder.
To promote networking among related resources.
Description:
We provide warm, understanding, effective and private support and professional referrals for new mothers and their family members via our toll-free Warm Line.
A volunteer who has personally experienced a postpartum mood disorder and recovered fully will return messages within twenty-four hours.
Our brochures are distributed widely throughout the Puget Sound region and can be seen in the offices of OB's, pediatricians, family practitioners, etc. They are also used by many childbirth educators, public health centers, and are sent home from many local hospital maternity wards.
Our newsletter is sent out twice per year and contains information on postpartum mood disorders and other related information.
We provide speakers, upon request, to help educate the public and the medical community. We have also had representatives speak on a national level at annual conferences.
Our support groups are facilitated by women who have personally experienced and recovered from a postpartum mood disorder. The attendees are given the opportunity to discuss their experience and are given a safe place to talk about their thoughts, emotions, and feelings. The support groups also offer educational information that is available at no cost. We are affiliated with other postpartum mood disorder support groups in Western Washington.
History:
Postpartum Support International of Washington (formerly known as DADWA) is a non-profit organization established in 1987 by Dawn Gruen ACSW and Lisa Bishop. PSI of WA was designed support and educate women, families and professionals about postpartum mood disorders. As a chapter of DAD, Inc. PSI of WA was one of the longest-running DAD chapters thanks to the hard work of its volunteers.
PSI of WA provides an opportunity for recovered moms to work as volunteers to help other mothers going through a postpartum mood disorder. Over the years we have provided a warm line for mothers (phone support), drop-in support groups, and educational materials. We have also held conferences for professionals to increase awareness in the professional community.
