People's Memorial Association is a cooperative consumer group that provides education, advocacy and options for simple, dignified and economical cremation and burial.
Description:
People's Memorial Association (PMA)is the nation's oldest and largest non-profit funeral consumer group with 100,000 members in western & central Washington. Members receive not only information and planning forms, but sizable discounts on funeral and cemetery costs. Currently People's Memorial has contracts with 15 funeral homes. Every two years PMA surveys the prices of funeral homes in our service area and makes that information available to consumers. PMA provides information and advocacy for the rights of all consumers to make informed choices regarding funeral arrangements.
History:
Founded in 1939, People's Memorial Association was the vision of a small group of Seattle citizens to create an alternative to the high costs and high-pressure sales of the funeral industry. PMA was an early advocate for simple cremation as a dignified, economical option. Since that time, over 170,000 Washington state residents have joined PMA and 110 affiliated organizations have sprung up around the US. In addition, the Funeral Consumer's Alliance serves as the national voice for the rights of consumers. In June 2007 PMA opened a member-owned cooperative funeral home, People's Memorial Funeral Cooperative.
