Dunshee House envisions individuals in communities connected by the shared values of health and well-being, personal development and compassionate support for one another. Dunshee House builds community and cultivates powerful, healthy lives by providing free, peer-facilitated emotional support and personal development services to those affected by HIV/AIDS, the greater LGBT communities. Our work is done in a spirit of safety, trust, inclusiveness, and the celebration of individual differences.
Description:
Dunhsee House offers a wide range of emotional support, personal development, and social opportunities to people affected with HIV/AIDS and the greater LBGT community. Our programming is comprised mainly of free, peer-faciltiated support, skills, and discussion groups. For a complete list of our programming, please visit http://dunsheehouse.org/groups_calendar.html.
History:
In 1984, at the beginning of what would become the AIDS crisis, a group of compassionate people came together to provide free, confidential, peer-facilitated support groups both for those who were facing death and also for their partners, family, friends, and caregivers. Eventually finding a home on Capitol Hill, Seattle AIDS Support Group provided services to those affected by HIV/AIDS while also expanding to provide emotional support and personal development services to gay and bisexual men (regardless of HIV status) in the mid-1990's. Later, programming was expanded to include groups for lesbian, bisexual, and queer women. Since 2000, we have offered support groups for transgendered individuals and many opportunities for the greater LGBT community to come together. In 2004, programming addressing HIV prevention and chemical dependency issues were added. Our name change - Dunshee House home of SASG, was a way of honoring our past, present, and future. Still very much a grass-roots, volunteer driven agency, DHSASG is famous for its Annual Christmas Tree and Holiday Greenery Sale Fundraising Event, an important source of revenue for House programming...and a long standing Capitol Hill tradition!
