Camelot Society
[ View Opportunities ]
Last updated on May 29, 2008

Camelot Society's mission is to enable individuals with developmental disabilities to achieve their maximum potential and improve their quality of life. To promote their dignity, self-esteem and individual choice in a residential environment. To facilitate integration with the general public. REALIZATION: By using both proven and innovative approaches. By developing and supporting a professional staff with pride and a commitment to excellence.

Description:
Camelot Society believes that all people need to be in control of their lives and we will assist our clients in reaching heir goals as well as assisting them in enriching their horizons. We at Camelot Society will dream and aspire with people to reach the goals that strengthen and enrich their lives. We believe that Camelot Society must be vitally conscious of the ramifications of past negative experiences by a person with handicaps in our society. We must consider that many of the people we serve may have never had a variety of experiences and opportunities that shape the average person in choosing where and with whom they live.

History:
Camelot Society's first home was built in 1972. The home serves people who attend public schools or work in the community. There are a wide variety of services provided including social skills training, recreation, and community integration programs necessary to enhance self-sufficiency and independence. Bedford and Brookhaven Homes (Woodinville): Founded in 1977, they were the first group homes in the world for people with Prader-Willi Syndrome, first defined in 1956 as an uncommon condition caused by a birth defect. The most common characteristics of Prader-Willi individuals include mild mental retardation, abnormal growth which usually results in short stature, behavior dysfunction and an insatiable appetite, coupled with a requirement for considerably fewer calories than the average person. Special emphasis in these homes is placed on weight loss maintenance, diet training, exercise and supported competitive employment. Carlton and Chelsea Homes (Duvall): Built in 1982, the focus is personal growth, social skills and independence. Utilizing creative and innovative programs, individuals are encouraged to realize their potential through personal choice making. Community involvement provides an array of opportunities to maximize successful achievement of individual goals. Barclay Group Home (North Seattle): Opened in 1983, individuals of Barclay Group Home concentrate on skills acquisition, community integration and empowerment to make choices. The use of community resources for educational, recreational and social interactions insures creative individual development. Supported Living: The agency Supported Living program was established in January 1998, beginning with services to two clients who moved from Camelot group home settings. Currently, the Supported Living program provides services to 8 adults with disabilities in 3 locations. All, but two SL clients are Prader-Willi, working in their community, enjoying independence and enhanced personal choice. Clients living in the Supported Living program live in community homes that they personally rent.
