The Salvation Army, in addition to providing assistance through the famous Christmas kettles, also offers an After-School Program for grades K-6th; a Summer Day Camp; a week long out of town camp - Camp Walter Johnson; a Women's League; a Men's Fellowship Club and weekly Church Services.

History:
The Salvation Army began in 1865 when a Methodist minister named William Booth started to preach in the slums of of London's East End. Recognizing the interdependence of material, emotional and spiritual needs, Booth provided food and shelter for the hungry and homeless, as well as alcohol rehabilitation services. Since then, the Salvation Army has grown to become a worldwide movement, working in over 100 countries on five continents. The basic social services developed by Williams Booth have remained an outward visible expression of the Army's strong religious principles. In addition, other programs that address contemporary needs have been established. These include day care centers, services for senior citizens, hospitals and medical facilities, shelters for battered wives and children, vocational training, correctional services and others. In the United States alone, the Salvation Army operates in 9,314 centers across the country. National headquarters are located in Alexandria, Virginia. Officers live on modest salaries, and do not own their homes. Their ministry, motivated by the love of God, is to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Because of its longstanding history of integrity an effectiveness, The Salvation Army has often been called "America's favorite and most-trusted charity."
