Deaconess Children's Services is dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect. We accomplish this through individual and group support, life-skills education, and outreach that build upon individual and family strengths.

Description:
Deaconess provides prevention and early intervention services to at-risk children, youths and families through five innovative programs: Impact - interactive parenting education and support for families at high risk of abuse and neglect; Gateway - parenting support and skills training for developmentally disabled parents; Parent Trust - self-help parenting support groups; Teen Parent Advocacy - support groups, life-skills training and parenting education for pregnant and parenting teens; and Darrington Family Support Center - a variety of programs, services and community events designed to strengthen families, build parenting skills, engage youth in healthy activities, and increase social networks of support.

History:
Our roots go all the way back to 1898, when the Snohomish County Orphanage was founded by the Men's Club of Everett. After running the orphanage for 15 years, the Men's Club sought help from the Methodist Church, which directed responsibility for the program to a group of women who were dedicated to the mission and teachings of the church. Thus the orphanage became known as the Deaconess Children's Home - a role it held until 1957, when the orphanage closed. Responding to changing needs in the community, Deaconess shifted its focus to a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed adolescents. Then, in 1980, we added two new programs - Gateway and Impact - and changed our name to Deaconess Children's Services. Eventually, all residential facilities were closed, and Deaconess staff concentrated their efforts on programs and services that offer education, support and outreach for at-risk children and families. Most of our programs share a component of prevention or early intervention in the areas of child abuse and neglect. In addition to donations from individuals, businesses and civic groups, Deaconess today is supported by the United Way of Snohomish County and by the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
