VSA arts of Washington, (VSAAW), is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing arts opportunities created by, for, and with persons with disABILITIES throughout the state of Washington. We advocate for equal access to the arts and to the arts in education for all by creating quality programs, both targeted and inclusive, which provide a strong avenue for artistic and creative exploration, expression, and development. We provide professional development opportunities for emerging and professional artists with disABILITIES and help forge links between artists with disABILITIES, arts communities, and the general public.
Description:
ADULT PROGRAMS
Participating in the arts increases artistic skills, self esteem, and quality of life. VSAAW's Adult Programs offer inclusive, community-based art classes and, for those building a career in the arts, shared studio space; solo and group exhibits; and other avenues for professional development.
CULTURAL ACCESS PROGRAMS
VSAAW performs Cultural Access Surveys to increase public awareness of access issues and to improve access to arts programs and facilities for people with disabilities throughout the state of Washington. VSAAW maintains a database of arts and disabilities resources; publishes print and online versions of arts access documents; and trains and manages volunteer Access Surveyors who perform surveys for arts organizations in their communities.
ARTS IN EDUCATION PROGRAMS
VSAAW offers a number of programs which promote the use of the arts in education of children with disabilities from pre-school through high school. These include: direct services for children at special events and in classrooms; training opportunities for teachers, artists, and parents; and curriculum guides for preschool and elementary teachers.
History:
Founded in the early 1970s, VSA arts of Washington (VSAAW) was incorporated in 1979 as Washington Committee, Arts for the Handicapped. VSAAW is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization under section 501 (c) 3 of the federal tax code. The first VSA arts Festival was held in 1975 in the Clover Park School District in Tacoma. That event began a movement that established VSA arts Festivals in other states through a national organization, VSA arts, an educational affiliate of teh John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Designated by Congress as the coordinating agency for arts programming for people with disabilities, VSA arts provides major support and accreditation to VSAAW.
