Book-It Repertory Theatre's mission is to transform great literature into great theatre and to inspire our audiences to read.
Description:
Book-It Repertory Theatre adapts four to five classic and contemporary works of fiction for the stage each season, using minimal sets and concentrating on the beauty of the spoken word. Book-It productions take the intimacy of reading a good story and turn it into a powerful communal experience, while still allowing the audience to fully engage their imaginations. Book-It’s mission of transforming books into stage plays and inspiring our audiences to read led to the formal creation of our Arts in Education Program, Book-It All Over (BIAO). Currently one of the largest theater education programs in Seattle, BIAO is preparing to enter its twelfth year of providing arts-based learning techniques that enhance literacy among youth. BIAO reaches students, educators and community members through Touring Stories, School Residencies, Teacher Development Courses and Student Matinee Performances.
History:
Book-It Repertory Theatre began as a touring company in 1987, adapting short stories for performance and touring them throughout the Northwest. In 1993, under the strong leadership of Co-Artistic Directors Jane Jones and Myra Platt, Book-It launched its first mainstage subscription season. Since then, the company has seen tremendous growth, sustaining the staging of four to five literary adaptations per season, as well as developing our Education and Community Outreach Program, Book-It All Over, specifically dedicated to inspiring children and young adults to read by performing stories throughout Washington State.
