Powerful Voices
Last updated on December 31, 2007

Powerful Voices instills leadership skills, fosters development of critical thinking and promotes individual potential in adolescent girls through programs in Seattle public middle schools and in and out of juvenile detention. Our mission is firmly rooted in our belief that strong girls become strong women.

Description:
Powerful Voices provides programs free of charge for girls in four Seattle middle schools as well as programs for girls detained in King County Juvenile Detention and upon their release. These programs focus on developing the individual strengths of young women. Our main programs are Girls Rights! Action! Power! (Girls RAP) and Strength Through All-Girl Education and Support (STAGES). These programs are faciliated by Powerful Voices instructors and volunteer adult participants and range from one day healthcare workshops for incarcerated girls, to after-school yearlong programs in middle schools. The programs have a core curriculum that can be tailored to meet the needs of the group in question and respond directly to the individual interests of the girls, focusing on their abilities and strengths.

History:
Three women with the vision, experience and desire to improve the lives of girls founded Powerful Voices in 1995. Their first assignment was to create a county-wide needs assessment, "Powerful Voices, King County Women Talk About Their Needs". The resulting report has been used to create new initiatives for women in our region. For Powerful Voices, it pointed out an important issue, many of the challenges facing women in King County were rooted in adolescence. Powerful Voices formed to address these issues at their root by developing the individual potential in adolescent girls. Since it's inception, Powerful Voices has served over 2000 girls in King County, 735 in 2002 alone.
