Hospitality House Mission Statement: To create an atmosphere of hospitality for our guests through the warmth of a welcoming and caring community, and to provide the time, program, and safe space to foster empowerment and to bring peace, hope, and security to their lives. We are glad to welcome women of all ethnic backgrounds as well as those with disabilities. There is an express policy prohibiting proselytizing of any specific religion.
Description:
Twelve south county churches support the House by rotating meal preparation ( a hot meal every night of the year) and providing other volunteer support. The House is currently being kept at capacity (9 beds). Paid staff are present Sunday-Friday during the day and overnight and volunteers staff the House on Friday and Saturday nights. Since the fall of 2007, Hospitality House is now maintaining extended daytime hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Culturally sensitive and safe emergency shelter is provided for up to 90 days for single women who are homeless, clean and sober. We are open 365 days of the year. We have a volunteer Board representing each church that meets monthly to set policy and also a group of volunteer coordinators from each church who organize meal provision and delivery each evening. To support our shelter financially, various fund raising events, donations, churches, civic organizations and grant resources from King County, South King County cities and Washington State augment our finances.
History:
We opened in September 2000 after a thorough community discussion process in the City of Burien to provide residents with knowledge of our intention. We presently have the volunteer support of ten other churches. To date, we have had no incidents of disruption in the community. Pastor Charles Kothe of Lake Burien Presbyterian Church was instrumental in bringing the dream of a women's homeless shelter to reality. The church was remodeled to comply with City of Burien requirements to provide shelter. Hospitality House operates as the only homeless women's shelter in South King County. As the need for shelter has become more apparent, our Board and volunteers are looking at expanding our services to families in South King County in the future in locations in adjacent communities. We are affiliated with organizations in the region providing services to the homeless and continually attempt to be current on pressing issues and how we may be able to address future needs.
