Powerful Schools engages children in learning by partnering with high needs Southeast Seattle public elementary schools to provide literacy and arts programs and to build communities that encourage student achievement.
Description:
Powerful Schools is a non-profit organization based in Southeast Seattle, dedicated to promoting student success in the city's academically and economically challenged south end public elementary schools. It is locally and nationally recognized for its ability to collaborate with school communities to improve student achievement in reading, writing and the arts through in-class and after school learning and enrichment opportunities. Powerful Schools partners with seven schools with a combined enrollment of more than 2,300 students (Beacon Hill, Dunlap, Hawthorne, Graham Hill, John Muir, the New School and Orca)
History:
Founded in 1991, Powerful Schools began as a coalition of two neighborhood groups and four public elementary schools: John Muir, Hawthorne, ORCA @ Columbia and Whitworth. The partnership was formed to improve schools as educational institutions but also to expand the way schools work with communities and act as the hub of a neighborhood.
