Valley Cities Counseling contributes to healthy communities and quality of life in South King County through the development, promotion, and delivery of exemplary behavioral health care services and related human services.
Description:
As the first nonprofit behavioral healthcare center in the Pacific Northwest Region to be accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, we are proud of our distinguished reputation for providing a full range of mental health and substance abuse services. We serve about 10,000 individuals of all ages and their families each year, through outpatient mental health and chemical dependency services for adults, older adults, youth and families; domestic violence perpetrator and victim treatment services; family support centers located in affordable housing complexes; vocational rehabilitation services; and outreach and supportive housing services to homeless individuals and families.
History:
In 1964 a group of concerned citizens from the communities of Auburn, Enumclaw and Kent formed the Aukeen Mental Health Service Board. Their mission was to develop an organization that could provide relief to people with mental health problems.
In 1965, the doors to Aukeen Mental Health Services, Inc. opened. There were two staff members and a budget of $10,000. In 1967, they became a United Way member agency and moved toward a point of stability in 1968.
Over the years the organization expanded and in January 2002, it merged with Federal Way Youth & Family Services, another United Way member agency.
The organization's services have also been expanded and now include specialized services such as anger management, school-based and nursing home-based services and many others.
The name of the organization underwent a few changes as well, and is now known as Valley Cities Counseling & Consultation.
This year, Valley Cities' services will touch the lives of close to 10,000 individuals and families of all ages through King County.
