Description:
TeenHope is youth agency providing shelter, mediation, drop-in services and outreach to youth age 13-17 years. We provide meals, showers, beds, resources,mediation case management to homeless teens. We're located at the county line between Snohomish and King Counties, in Shoreline, WA. We have a great staff and group of volunteers that give hope to youth in crisis.

History:
TeenHope was incorporated in 1993, after a grassroots organization of concerned adults and young people realized the problem of homelessness in our communities - especially in King County. We came to Shoreline in April of 1995. After much hard work, TeenHope opened its doors in January 1996 for four nights a week. In 1998, TeenHope finally had the funding and resources to operate 7 nights a week. We currently operate every night from 6pm until 7:30 am.
In 1999, PeaceTable was created. We team up an adult and teen trained in mediation with a community family in need.
In 2003, TeenHaven was created. We provide drop-in services and outreach to youth in both King County and Snohomish County.

Overall Experience

Volunteers are paired with a staff member to provide positive role models and support to teens during the hours the shelter is open. If you enjoy the company of teenagers you can spend an evening eating supper, playing games, talking with kids, and helping staff supervise. Volunteers are also needed to spend the night (sleeping in a guest bedroom) so they can be on-call as a second adult in the house and to help with breakfast in the morning. Staff were helpful and I felt needed.

Volunteering at TeenHope was safe and enjoyable. The youth in the shelter are eager to spend time with interested, caring adults. They appreciate the chance to come in off the streets, eat a hot meal, take a warm shower and sleep in a quiet, safe bed. The shelter staff are very experienced and effective working with youth.
