It is the mission of Lifetime Advocacy Plus (LA+) to enhance the lives and protect the rights of people with disabilities, by providing guardianship; personal attention; advocacy; trust and financial management; and personal services.
Description:
Lifetime Advocacy Plus provides legal guardianship services in 27 Central and Western Washington counties to people who have been determined by a State Superior Court to be mentally incapacitated. These individuals, due to their incapacity are unable to make critical life decisions, cannot advocate for or protect themselves, and are vulnerable to abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
LA+ does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or degree of disability, and accepts clients from all economic backgrounds, including the indigent. Each client has a plan of care specifically tailored to them, and may contain unique provisions. If a client regains skills, LA+ petitions the court to order limited guardianship or none at all. On occasion, LA+ may also enter into a private contract with the family of a person with disabilities, but for the most part we are the legal guardian, a relationship with the client that generally lasts the remainder of the individual's lifetime.
History:
In 1963, more than 500 residents in State institutions had no one available to visit them or provide advocacy and support for appropriate medical, financial and other decision making, on their behalf. In response to a call from one of the State institutions, a loosely formed group of parents began visiting the residents, most of whom had not had a visit from anyone in ten years. This was the birth of The Foundation for the Handicapped. This group of parents had children with disabilities living at home and had already begun to worry about what would happen to their own sons and daughters when they were no longer able to provide care. They thought about long-term advocacy and the importance of being a voice for those individuals. As the organization matured, the focus shifted from serving only children with developmental disabilities to include all individuals who experience any type of cognitive disability that is so severe that the Superior Court, after investigation, feels that someone other than the individual needs to make decisions on his or her behalf. In 1993, the name was changed to Lifetime Advocacy Plus, to more clearly represent our mission.
