We would like to create at Beacon Bluff P-Patch a place for neighbors to come together and create a friendly environment for aesthetic, cultural and educational purposes that benefits the whole area.
Description:
We are at work building a switchback trail above the vegetable gardens which will meander through native understory plantings that will serve as an outdoor educational lab for students at Beacon Hill primary across the street. We would also like to involve seniors at the adjacent low-income housing to be involved with the restoration and maintenance.
The slope between 14th and 15th was used as a dump for many years and the area has seen it's share of drugs and illegal activity, and reclaiming the area has really contributed to a sense of safety and beauty at a once neglected site.
This is a long term project and it will be fun to see it's creative evolution over time.
History:
Beacon Bluff P-Patch consists of a growing group of neighbors in the Beacon Hill area.
This project is one of several in the area that is concerned both with community building and with ecological function. Preserving greenspace allows for habitat and migratory corridors, and is a very positive attribute of any neighbrohood. Natural beauty is strongly correlated to a peaceful environment and is conducive to good health.
We rely on outside help in getting this project established. Once the trees and understory are well rooted and have grown to a more substantial size the maintenance will be more manageable. At this stage in it's development, the project needs at least 4 major volunteer events to maintain the area from encroachment of invasive species. Your help is very valuable and appreciated!
