We are committed to the enhancement of Kirkland as a community for living, working, and leisure, with an excellent quality of life which preserves the City's existing charm and natural amenities. Basic Values:
Integrity; Excellence; Respect for the Individual; Responsiveness.
Description:
The City of Kirkland is a Council-Manager form of government. The City Council is the legislative body; its members are the community's decision makers. The City Manager serves the Council and the community in carrying out policies and overseeing the delivery of municipal services. The City operates a volunteer program, which allows the City to take advantage of the extraordinary reserve of knowledge, talent, and skill possessed by volunteers within the community. The City's volunteer program involves interested residents in local government by providing the opportunity to perform work of value to the community.
History:
The city of Kirkland was named after British born steel tycoon, Peter Kirk, who came to the Northwest in the 1880s seeking new development opportunities. Kirk envisioned a "Pittsburgh of the West" on the eastern shore of Lake Washington, with the main economy focused on steel production. Due to the stock market crash of 1893, Kirk's dream was never realized, however, despite the closure of the steel mill, Kirkland incorporated in 1905 with a population of 400. Since that time, the City of Kirkland has continued to grow. Peter Kirk's drea of a city on the east shore of Lake Washington has been fulfilled, although not exactly as he imagined it. Today, Kirkland is a vibrant and thriving community of 44,000 people.
