The mission of the Goodman Atwood Community Center is strengthening lives in our community. In fulfilling its mission, the center facilitates a community atmosphere, identifies and responds to community needs, cooperates with individuals and other agencies to provide that help, promotes recreational and cultural events, and creates and coordinates meeting space, programs and information and services that reflect the community's ethnic and economic diversity.
Description:
In keeping with its mission, the Goodman Atwood Community Center's goals are: to help build a sense of community among neighborhood residents; to provide opportunities for social activities, education, social development and nourishment to at-risk children, especially preschool, elementary, and middle school students; to provide opportunities for social activities, education, social development, and nourishment to older adults; to provide short-term emergency food relief, to organize and sponsor community events for education, socializing, and celebration; to organize and offer volunteer opportunities; to help community groups organize and seek assistance from government officials, businesses, and social service agencies; to provide space for individuals and groups to meet, learn, and celebrate; to provide information about community issues, people, and events; and to refer people requesting assistance to appropriate individuals and agencies.
History:
The building that houses the Goodman Atwood Community Center was built in 1917 for single men working in area factories. In 1925 the building became the home of the East Side Business Men's Association and East Side Women's Club. In 1945, the ESBM club donated the building to the United Way--then called the United Community Chest, to be used for a youth center serving working class children. The building has housed community programming ever since. The Center became a full-service center when it affiliated with United Neighborhood Centers in 1954. The Atwood Community Center became its own independent non-profit organization in 1999. The Atwood Community Center's basement was renovated in 1994, turning the basement into a safe, bright and beautiful youth center for kids to learn and grow in. 1996 brought the addition of an elevator, office space, bathroom, and conference room. The new Youth Resource Center at 2717 Atwood Avenue opened in June 1999. The facility houses after-school, summer camp, middle school empowerment, Girl Neighborhood Power, computer classes, 4-H clubs, and local youth group meetings. The year 2000 brought the remodeling of the Atwood Community Center's first-floor kitchen and food pantry. March 5, 2007 at the Atwood Community Center, we never imagined we would be so lucky to be the beneficiary of such a gift from the the Goodmans — a gift of $2,000,000 and the honor of naming our organization in their good name.
