The Learning Disabilities Association of Washington (LDA) promotes and provides services and support to maximize the quality of life for individuals and families affected by learning and attentional disabilities.
Description:
The Learning Disabilities Association of Washington is a membership association and a United Way Partner Agency that supports those in Washington State with learning and attentional disabilities. We do this by providing free information and referral telephone service, social skill classes for adults and adolescents, tutoring, testing, employer assistance to accommodate those with learning disabilities, training and community education. We provide a quarterly newsletter and a Directory of Member Services to our members.
History:
People who understood the kind of problems learning disabilities cause started the LDA of Washington 40 years ago. They were frustrated parents of children struggling in school who banded together to offer each other support, education and the tools to help their children become successful. This group of volunteer parents worked on advocacy, legislative awareness and helped establish special education laws in the state. From these first grassroots efforts we have grown into a membership based professional organization that offers individuals with learning and attentional disabilities the knowledge and power to be successful in their lives. In 1964 we became the Washington State affiliate of the Learning Disabilities Association of America. Since that time we have grown into a resource that thousands of people throughout the state have come to rely on. One of our services is the CHOICES Program. It is designed to address the client's difficulties in social skills, anger management, decision making, and problem solving, conflict resolution, employment issues. It also provides information on learning and attentional disabilities, offers suggestions on specific coping mechanisms and provides community resource information. A curriculum has been developed and successfully used since 1988. The uniqueness of CHOICES is that it uses an experiential/instructional format to help the individual learn behavior, develop attitudes, and foster beliefs that will enhance their opportunity to learn new innovative solutions to difficulties that have made them unsuccessful in life. Through this program individuals begin to feel successful, which is the key to motivation. They learn skills to understand their aggressive behavior, deal appropriately with their anger, make smart decisions and peacefully resolve conflicts. Our CHOICES program has been adopted in several states and in Bermuda. Noted ADD experts Dr. Daniel Amen and Dr. Edward Hallowell have cited the S.T.A.R.T. program in their books as one of the most outstanding programs of its kind in the country. Our adult welfare to work program helps individuals to become self-sufficient by teaching them the skills necessary to seek, obtain, and maintain employment. Mathmatica Policy Research, Inc. recognized this program as innovative in its publication "Reaching all Job Seekers: Employment Programs for Hard to Employ Populations." Our adolescent social skills program, CHOICES, has also received national recognition and is taught in many locations throughout the United States and overseas. Our programs continue to evolve as we strive to do the very best for our clients. A noted expert in the learning disabilities field once said, "Learning disabilities are not rocket science; they are actually more difficult to understand." This hidden disability can affect many areas of an individual's life. Understanding the dynamics and consequences of its impact can be complicated and challenging. The Learning Disabilities Association of Washington exists to address this multi-dimensional disability in all aspects of our community.
