The Muscular Dystrophy Association is focused on finding the cure for this neuromuscular disease. In the interim, the MDA provides their clients, ages 6-21, with a week long Summer Camp. Camp is a place that provides each individual a week to be with others who have the same ability levels as themselves.
Description:
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a non-profit organization that uses the funds it raises for research, Summer Camp, clinic appointments, support groups, transportation, and durable medical equipment. We are always looking for volunteer counselors, no younger than 16, for our Summer Camp. Camp is a place where for one week, kids with a neuromuscular disease are matched one to one with a volunteer counselor. Together the two can participate in swimming, horseback riding, arts and crafts, watching movies, camp fires, skits, and just hanging out. The counselors are also there to help the campers with daily needs such as dressing, bathing, toileting, and eating. Not all kids that attend camp need such care since there is a varying degree of ability levels amongst the campers. It is a fun filled week for everyone involved, and one that you will never forget!
History:
MDA was started in the 1950's when some parent's of sick children got together with doctors to find out why the kids were sick. They soon termed their sickness as Muscular Dystrophy and in 1955 the first Summer Camp was introduced as an experiment. Ever since then, camps have sprung up all over the country and in Puerto Rico. To date, MDA has 88 camps that serve approximately 4,200 campers nation wide! Over 5,000 wonderful people give their time to volunteer as counselors each year.
