Our mission is to advocate for and provide effective alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention and treatment services to Asian Pacific Islander (API) children, youth, adults, families and communities in the Seattle-King county area in a culturally competent and language appropriate manner.
Description:
Our programs include: a school-based prevention program in selected elementary school classes; tobacco prevention community education and coalition building with local and national tobacco prevention groups; case management and treatment services to at-risk API youth through outreach, assessment, referral/resource services, individual and group counseling, problem solving, family counseling integrating cultural beliefs and life experiences unique in the API population. Community education and advocacy for culturally competent treatment services are agency priorites.
History:
WAPIFASA began as a grass roots task force of community leaders concerned about substance abuse and tobacco issues in the API population. We established non-profit status in 1993 and began prevention services. With funding for outpatient treatment services, we successfully completed the state chemical dependency treatment certification process. The agency continues to grow.
