Home Alive is a community-based anti-violence organization that provides affordable self-defense classes, workshops, and educational events for all people within a social change framework.

Description:
Home Alive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides anti-violence and self-defense workshops, organizes around issues of violence and does outreach and education through arts and music events. Home Alive supports and partners with organizations mobilizing around anti-violence and human rights. Home Alive offers training, support, and resources to organizations, businesses, schools, shelters and non-profits. Home Alive organizes arts and music events that bring communities together, creates awareness about community involvement in anti-violence, and creates dialogue on issues of violence.

History:
Home Alive was established in 1993 as an organic response to the rape and murder of local singer Mia Zapata. In the aftermath of Mia’s death, local artists, musicians, and others gathered to discuss issues of violence and safety in their community. What they found was that self-defense classes were prohibitively expensive and focused on tools and tactics that did not fit with the reality of their daily lives. DON'T walk alone, DON'T walk at night, DON'T carry a lot of money, DON'T do this, DON'T do that, BEWARE of strangers. Home Alive was born when a group of nine women decided to address these inequities by using their resources (arts/music benefits) to raise money, study various methods of self defense, create a flexible, option-based anti-violence curriculum, and provide classes to the community at large on a sliding scale basis so NO ONE would be turned away for lack of funds.
