Kent School District
Last updated on July 15, 2008

Our mission is to successfully prepare all students for their future.

Description:
The Kent School District is the fourth largest district in the state. We work hard to provide a safe, fun learning environment while focusing on the importance of diversity and academic achievement. We currently have 40 schools with approximately 26,000 students.

History:
In l869, School District #3 was organized in the Lower White River Valley. A log cabin served as a schoolhouse for 15 students. The first actual school building was built in l872. School was held during a three-month summer term until l894 when the term was increased to six months. By World War I, each corner of the district was served by a local school. In l944, Thomas, O'Brien, and Kent districts merged to become district #413. Kent, Panther Lake, and Meridian merged in 1948 to become the present Kent School District #415 that covers 73 square miles. At that time, the district consisted of five schools. The student population was 1,050 elementary students and 390 secondary students. As the population increased, diversity came to Kent School District (KSD) and the Kent community. The population of KSD has increased to over 26,000 in 2002, with the percentage of ethnic minority students in the district increasing to 33%. KSD serves 3042 students who do not speak English as their first language. These students represent 86 languages. Kent School District has been a growing district throughout its 134-year history. Through the years, we have become more diverse in ethnicity, economy, and values. We have increasingly involved parents, community, and business members in making critical decisions about our schools and educational programs. The Kent School District is projected to continue to grow to 28,000 students by the end of this decade. With a history of strong performance and continuing public support, our district expects to meet the challenge of higher academic standards and increased accountability.
