The mission of the Hope Heart Institute is serving humanity through cardiovascular research and education. We are dedicated to preventing and treating heart and blood vessel disease, and to improving the physical, emotional and spiritual quality of life for all at risk of - or afflicted with - cardiovascular disease.
Description:
Research: With a bench-to-bedside approach to research, The Hope is a leading private, nonprofit, cardiovascular research institution specializing in clinical studies, basic research and translational medicine. The Hope conducts clinical trials with patients in more than two-dozen physician's offices around Western Washington. Clinical programs are aimed at testing new medications, devices and treatment methods in an effort to improve the overall standard of care in the treatment of heart disease. These trials could lead to new treatments for patients in a very short time. In conjunction with The Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason The Hope conducts basic sciences and translational medicine studies to find new avenues of combating heart disease through the study of cells, blood vessels and gene therapies. These scientific programs will change the way heart disease is treated, and prevented, in the future. Education: Through community education, we believe we can make a positive difference in the way heart disease affects our community. We strive to bring current knowledge of cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment to the public in an entertaining, understandable and inspiring way. The Hope's primary prevention education programs address three major questions. The basic anatomy of the heart? What is heart disease? What causes/prevents heart disease? The goal is to... Promote heart-healthy behavior change in our communities. Design and deliver heart disease prevention programs to educators and students that align with Essential Academic Learning Requirements. Improve curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of the population in preventing heart disease. We do that through a variety of programs. Major Projects Women Take HeartTM, is a free educational series highlighting the causes, impacts and prevention of heart disease and is tailored to a growing, proactive population of women. Youth Take HeartTM, is a comprehensive cardiovascular education curriculum for grades 6-12. Kids Take HeartTM, is a free educational program for children grades 3-6. Other educational programs include partnerships with the Seattle Children's Museum and the Pacific Science Center. Hope Health publications are informative, monthly publications, along with a variety of brochures and pamphlets. The Hope's scientists and educators give frequent public presentations at local, national and international events.
History:
The Hope Heart Institute was founded in 1959 by Lester R. Sauvage, MD, a world-renowned cardiovascular surgeon and research scientists. Dr. Sauvage and The Hope earned international recognition in 1962 through pioneering coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Today, The Hope's research remains at the forefront of the cardiovascular field—and our health education publications reach nearly 5 million readers a year.
