The Service Board (tSB) provides youth with life-changing experiences that build self-knowledge, skills, courage, determination and an ethic of public service. TSB models the power of a supportive intergenerational culture and serves Seattle area youth in need of its caring community.

Description:
The Service Board instills in high school-aged youth a deep sense of life purpose based on an ethic of public service and a conviction in their abilities to shape the future. TSB's mission is accomplished by:

1. Building meaningful relationships among high school-age youth and adult mentors from a broad range of academic, racial, cultural and economic backgrounds.
2. Employing structured programs that promote self-esteem, academic and life skills, and encouraging insights on cultural traditions and social equity.
3. Instilling a commitment to volunteerism through innovative community service projects.
4. Cultivating a willingness to take risks and overcome fears through exhilarating, safe and empowering snowboarding adventures.



History:
TSB was founded in 1995 following the drug-related murder of a young Seattle man, Jay Bateman. Those who knew him saw this tragic event as a call to action: no longer could they sit by while kids grew up absorbing only the messages of consumption and apathy. Starting with the first program in January of 1995, high-school students from across Seattle participated in a six-month program focusing on community service, mentoring and snowboarding. Young adult volunteers provided logistical supoort, listening and camaraderie.
Since launching the first program, the number of teenage participants, adult volunteers and small business sponsors have grown steadily. TSB's first eleven years have seen an idea blossom into full blown programs that have a significant impact on all those involved. The core values that inform tSB remain as critical today as the day that Jay Bateman was shot. TSB remains dedicated to finding new and constructive ways for young people to make a positive difference in their community throughout their lives.
